This gorgeous mask has been handmade in Venice using a traditional papier mâché technique where strips of dampened paper that have been soaked in polyvinyl acetate are layered onto a plaster cast. Once dried, the mask is then carefully sanded by hand to obtain a smooth surface and coated in a fine plaster resin ready to apply the decoration, which consists of gold leaf overlay for the face and mane, with silver leaf overlay applied to the horns to make them even more prominent.

This is a surprisingly comfortable mask to wear when it’s secured in place with the silk ribbon ties, but when it’s not being worn it can also make a very unusual and eye-catching decorative piece hung on the wall.
