The famous Comedy and Tragedy Greek theatre masks named Commedia and Tragedia or “Mascherade Ride”, meaning “mask that laughs” and “Maschere Piange”, which means “mask that cries”
The Commedia is the laughing smiling faced mask depicting happiness and fun, with smiling eyes and up turned mouth and plenty of laughter lines
The Tragedia is the sad crying faced mask depicting sorrow and tragedy, with a creased haggard face, screwed up eyes and a down turned mouth
These masks have become symbolic with Theatre, originating from Greek mythology these masks were originally used in theatre to depicts the moods and emotions of the characters, exaggerated so that everyone in the theatre could see what was being portrayed
These genuine Venetian masks are made from paper mache and decorated in the Venetian theatre Harlequin style of patchwork, taken from the character Harlequin who always patched his clothes instead of disposing of them
This style is achieved using black red and gold acrylic paints with gold leaf detail and snippets of sheets of music
This stunning pair of masks make a fabulous alternative wall decoration or a great table centre piece at any Venetian themed masquerade event
