The name ""Colombina"" meaning ""Little Dove"" is a stock character in the Commedia dell'Arte, which was a form of masked theatre that began in Italy during the 16th Century. Colombina was a beautiful maidservant who was Harlequins mistress and Pierrot’s wife in the Commedia dell'Arte.
It was thought that the Colombina mask was created as a female alternative to the Bauta mask as it allowed a certain degree of anonymity without covering up Colombina’s beautiful face, although there is no pictorial evidence that she ever wore a mask.
The modern day Colombina mask comes in a wide variety of colours and designs and can be worn by both sexes. As a half-face mask it lends a certain level of anonymity covering the eyes and cheek bones, but still allows wearers to eat, talk and drink without feeling restricted.
